Golf Course Information
Description
At approx. 6200 feet elevation, the "Mile High Club" is a full service 9 hole country club. Located 7 miles south of Lead on Hwy 85 and off the Rochford Rd., the course naturally winds through tree lined meadows. The greens are small but receptive and the natural slope makes for some interesting reads. Don't be long and stay below the hole!
Lead Country Club was organized in 1922. The course was laid out on land donated by Homestake Mining Company, by John Bland, who had designed a course at the Claremont Hotel in California, and the summer before had laid out the course at Hot Springs. Mr. Bland went on to later design Belle Fourche, Custer, Spearfish, and two courses no longer in existance, one at Custer State Park, and one at Palmer Gulch, just outside of Hill City.
The following year, the Club House was built and the existing holes re-numbered to facilitate starting and ending at the Club House. In 1924 the world famous elevated #1 Tee was built and the course has played the same way it does now since the mid 30's.
In 2006, Barrick Gold Corp, the new owners of the Country Club, decided to sell the land where the golf course was located. When the members couldn't find a way to purchase the land, they agreed to accept a proposal from a group of local developers who promised to buy the property, develop and sell lots adjacent to the course, and at the beginning of 2009, deed the course back to the members. Thanks to the great work done by the developers, in cooperation with the Board of Directors and members of the club, Lead Country Club is poised for a great future.
The Lead Daily Call documented the golf boom in Lead and the Black Hills. They told of the first golfers in Lead carving out 4 holes at the crossing in Spearfish Canyon, how a hardware store in Lead had a driving range, and documented the grand opening of Lead Country Club, including a 6 hole exhibition match watched by over 200 spectators.
